Flat-Coated Retriever Appearance

The Flat Coated Retriever dog is much like its ancestor Newfoundland (Terre-Neuve)... but in a smaller size and especially "thinned". He is a lively and active dog with medium size, elegant appearance, and powerful but not heavy structure. The head is long, unique to the breed and described as being "of one piece", with a flat and moderately broad skull. The jaws are strong muscular and a relatively long muzzle to allow for upland game and carrying of birds. The ears are relatively small, well set, pending and they adhere well to the sides of the head. The eyes are dark, brown or hazel with an intelligent and friendly expression. The legs are straight and muscular. The tail is always carried gaily, but it does not rise above the dorsal line. He is racier, lighter, and more elegant in appearance than the other retriever breeds.

Flat Coated Retriever origins and history

Originating in England, in the mid-19th century around 1860 as a gamekeeper’s dog; but the origin breeds of the Flat Coated Retriever dog are not really defined, but it’s considered from a cross between a Newfoundland for strength and Irish Setter for enhanced scenting ability. Crossbreeding with Collie-type dogs has certainly being used to increase the breed's trainability. His ancestors were called "Wavecoated Retriever" is to say "report wavy haired dogs" and it can be inferred that the first copies were not smooth coat as the current breed. But Flat-Coated Retrievers have a very low rate of hip luxating patellas and dysplasia. Compared to other medium-sized breeds the statistics show a rate of less than 3%.of hip dysplasia in the breed.

It may, as well, live in a house, apartment, or a garden. He loves to swim and it is advisable to play with him as often as possible in a lake or river.
